Patiala, May 27
SGPC chief advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami on Wednesday met Baba Balbir Singh, head of Akali Buddha Dal 96 Crore, in Patiala to discuss concerns regarding the Punjab Government’s recently passed anti-sacrilege bill. Dhami claimed the proposed legislation contains several shortcomings that have created confusion and panic among the Sikh community.
Addressing the media, Dhami said a major religious congregation will be held at Baba Bakala Sahib on May 31 to deliberate on the issue and suggest necessary amendments. He stated that various Sikh religious leaders and organizations are expected to participate in the gathering.
Dhami further alleged that fear surrounding the bill has led some people to return Gutka Sahibs kept at home, adding that releasing exact figures could create further panic. He emphasized the need for clarity and corrections in the proposed law.
Meanwhile, Baba Balbir Singh assured support for the gathering and said he would appeal to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to address the shortcomings in the bill. He expressed hope that the May 31 congregation would help find a constructive solution.
