Patiala, June 26
On the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Patiala Member of Parliament Dr. Dharamvir Gandhi stressed the need for a policy-driven approach to combat drug addiction, saying the issue should be addressed through support and rehabilitation rather than punishment.
Dr. Gandhi said countries like Portugal and others in Europe have adopted policies that focus on helping drug users instead of treating them as criminals. He argued that India should also reconsider its approach towards drug-related laws and shift from a punishment-based system to one centered around assistance and recovery.
He said people who consume substances such as opium or poppy husk are often treated like criminals and sent to prisons, whereas many of them are victims who need help. He urged people to put pressure on the government to bring changes in the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) framework so that it focuses more on rehabilitation and support.
“Only through such an approach can people leave addiction behind,” Dr. Gandhi said.
Speaking about the ongoing process of changing the Congress party president, Dr. Gandhi said discussions were underway within the party, and suggestions had been taken from leaders.
He said the final decision now lies with the party high command, and whoever receives approval will have the full support of the Punjab Congress unit. He added that the party would fight the upcoming Assembly elections under the leadership chosen by the high command.
Dr. Gandhi expressed hope that a decision regarding the party leadership would be announced by the evening.
