Chandigarh, June 3
In a strong anti-corruption action, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau arrested Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Jaswinder Singh, posted at Police Station Shutrana in Patiala district, for allegedly accepting a bribe of 18,000.
According to officials, the case came to light after a resident of the village of Bakraha filed a complaint alleging that the ASI demanded illegal gratification in connection with an assault case involving his relatives.
The complainant stated that his relatives were injured in a fight with neighbours and were treated at Rajindra Hospital, where police were informed. The accused officer later visited the hospital to record statements.
It is alleged that the ASI demanded 20,000 to initiate legal action against the opposing party but later agreed to settle for 18,000.
Unable to meet the demand, the complainant approached the Vigilance Bureau, Patiala range. Acting on the complaint, a trap was laid, and the ASI was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe in the presence of official witnesses.
A case has been registered under the Prevention of Corruption Act, and further investigation is underway.
