Patiala, June 19
Outsourced employees of Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) on Thursday closed Gate No. 2 of the department’s Patiala office as part of a protest demanding contractual status under the electricity department.
The protest was organised by outsourced workers who said the government had earlier held discussions with them and agreed that employees working on an outsourced basis would be brought under departmental contracts. However, they claimed the promised notification had not been issued, despite waiting several days.
The union leaders said the delay had forced them to take protest action. They warned that if their demands were not considered, a larger movement would be planned in Patiala in the coming days.
According to the workers, more than 5,000 employees are currently working on an outsourced basis in the power department, and they play a key role in carrying out departmental operations.
The leaders further stated that some employees may begin a hunger strike in the coming days. They also warned that any alleged action against protesting workers would lead to a stronger response from the union.
The PSPCL outsourced employees’ representatives said they would continue their agitation until the government takes action on their demand.
