CHANDIGARH, OCTOBER 24
Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan on Thursday asserted that any matter involving a breach of privilege must be brought to his attention before any action is taken. The Privileges Committee, led by Sandhwan, is responsible for examining alleged breaches and ensuring the dignity and authority of the House, its committees, and members are upheld.
On October 22, the Vidhan Sabha Secretariat withdrew a letter (No. 541, dated October 18, 2024) concerning a complaint about a breach of privilege, filed by Jaiton MLA Amolak Singh. The letter, which sought clarification from teachers of a government primary school in Godara, District Faridkot, was sent as part of a routine procedure.
However, Speaker Sandhwan intervened, criticizing the Secretariat’s handling of the issue, and ordered the letter’s withdrawal. He emphasized that teachers play a pivotal role in society and their dignity must be protected.
