A government-run training facility in Punjab’s Malerkotla has trained more than 27,500 drivers in less than two years, in what officials say is transforming road safety and employability in the state. Punjab Transport Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar said the Regional Driving Training Centre (RDTC), launched in June 2023 as a collaboration between the state transport department and Ashok Leyland, is addressing the shortage of qualified commercial drivers while also preparing a new generation of safety-conscious motorists. “The centre is a unique initiative to empower rural and urban youth, increase their employability, and make Punjab’s roads safer,” Bhullar said.
The minister stressed that proper training not only reduces accidents but also strengthens compliance with traffic rules. He said the Malerkotla centre reflected the state government’s broader commitment to enhance driving skills, promote road safety, and raise the social standing of drivers.
