Hoshiarpur, June 15
A minor boy has been apprehended in Hoshiarpur for allegedly raping and blackmailing a 16 year old girl, police said on Monday.
According to officials, the accused, a senior at the girl’s private academy, first contacted her on Snapchat in October last year. Their communication led to regular meetings near the academy. Police said the boy allegedly demanded money from her on several occasions.
On 15 December, he reportedly took the girl to a house he claimed belonged to his grandmother, where he allegedly raped her. He is also accused of recording an objectionable video of the girl and threatening to make it public if she revealed the incident.
The survivor recently confided in her mother, who lodged a complaint with the police on Sunday. “The accused was apprehended following the complaint filed by the girl’s mother,” police officials confirmed.
The case has raised concerns about the misuse of social media platforms in targeting minors. Authorities said further investigation is underway to determine the extent of the blackmail and whether others were involved.
Police emphasised that strict action will be taken, and counselling support is being extended to the survivor.
