Hoshiarpur, April 17
An inmate lodged in the Central Jail in Hoshiarpur died on Friday while being taken to a hospital after his health suddenly deteriorated, officials said.
The deceased has been identified as Aman Loi, a resident of the Ravidas Nagar locality in Hoshiarpur. He was serving a 10-year sentence in connection with a gang rape case registered at Sadar Hoshiarpur police station and had returned to the jail on Thursday evening after availing parole.
According to jail authorities, Loi complained of uneasiness on Friday morning. He was being shifted to the Civil Hospital for treatment when he died on the way.
Superintendent of Central Jail Satnam Singh said the preliminary cause of death appears to be cardiac arrest.
He said an inquiry has been initiated as per procedure to ascertain the exact cause of death. The body has been kept in the mortuary of the Civil Hospital for post mortem examination.
Officials said further action will be taken based on the findings of the inquiry and the post-mortem report.
