New Delhi, June 29

India’s industrial output expanded by 5.1 percent in May, up from 4.9 percent in April, driven mainly by improved performance in the manufacturing sector, according to official data released by the National Statistics Office on Monday.
The latest figures mark the second monthly release of the Index of Industrial Production under the revised series introduced by the government.
According to the National Statistics Office, the Index of Industrial Production recorded a year-on-year growth of 5.1 percent in May. The manufacturing sector, which carries the largest weight in the index, grew 5.5 percent and remained the primary contributor to the overall increase in industrial output. The electricity and gas supply sector also recorded strong growth of 9.9 percent during the month, further supporting the expansion in industrial activity. The latest data suggests steady momentum in the country’s industrial sector, with manufacturing and electricity continuing to drive overall growth.
The May figures provide another indication of sustained industrial activity under the revised Index of Industrial Production series.
