Goa, June 18

Suzlon has launched the S175 (5 MW), India’s tallest and most powerful wind turbine, following its successful commissioning at Vijayanagar in Karnataka. The turbine was unveiled by Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi and is being positioned as India’s first Firm and Dispatchable Renewable Energy (FDRE)-ready wind turbine designed to support the country’s clean energy ambitions.

The launch marks a significant development in India’s renewable energy sector, with Suzlon stating that the S175 is designed to support hybrid, round-the-clock and firm power solutions while expanding the role of wind energy in the country’s energy transition.

Developed using operational insights from Suzlon’s existing wind energy fleet of more than 15.5 GW, the turbine combines advanced technology with proven reliability to improve power generation and project economics, particularly in low and medium-wind-speed regions.

The S175 features a 175-meter rotor, a 160-meter hybrid lattice tower, and a blade tip height of 247.5 meters. According to the company, these specifications enable the turbine to access stronger, more consistent wind streams, resulting in enhanced energy capture. The turbine is also equipped with advanced aerodynamics, carbon-girder blade technology, and intelligent control systems to improve operational efficiency.

Speaking at the launch, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi said Suzlon has played an important role in the growth of India’s wind energy sector over the past three decades through continuous innovation and technological advancement.

He said the introduction of the S175 would contribute significantly to achieving India’s wind energy goals while reflecting the country’s growing capabilities in advanced clean energy solutions.

Girish Tanti, Executive Vice Chairman of Suzlon Group, said the turbine has been specifically engineered to suit Indian wind conditions, grid requirements and operational realities.

He noted that the key advantage of the S175 lies not only in increasing energy generation but also in making previously unviable wind sites commercially feasible, thereby expanding the country’s wind energy potential.

With the launch of the S175, Suzlon aims to unlock new opportunities in India’s wind energy sector and support the country’s transition to higher renewable energy adoption through advanced, locally engineered technology.
