Chandigarh, June 9
Haryana Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi has directed all departments involved in the Yamuna Action Plan to expedite sewage treatment, industrial waste management and pollution control projects aimed at improving the water quality of the Yamuna River and its tributary drains.
Reviewing the progress of the action plan at a high level meeting in Chandigarh, Rastogi said the state government is committed to reducing pollution through a coordinated and time bound approach. He instructed officials to ensure that all ongoing and proposed projects are completed by December 31, 2027.
The review focused on efforts to strengthen wastewater treatment infrastructure across the Yamuna catchment area. Several projects involving new sewage treatment plants, common effluent treatment plants, micro sewage treatment facilities and drain interception systems are currently under implementation in different parts of the state.
Officials informed the meeting that additional sewage treatment and industrial effluent treatment capacity is being developed through projects that are at various stages of approval, tendering, and execution. These initiatives form a key part of Haryana’s strategy to reduce the discharge of untreated wastewater into rivers and drains.
Among the major works under review were the upgradation of treatment infrastructure in Panipat, the establishment of micro sewage treatment plants in villages of Karnal district, and the expansion of wastewater treatment facilities in Sonipat, Gurugram, and Faridabad. The government is also focusing on improving pollution monitoring and strengthening measures to prevent untreated effluents from entering natural water bodies.
Rastogi directed departments to maintain strict compliance with discharge standards and ensure regular monitoring of treatment facilities. He also stressed the need for stronger enforcement against illegal waste dumping and unauthorized discharge of effluents.
The chief secretary asked officials to resolve pending land and procedural issues on a priority basis to avoid delays in project execution. He emphasized that close coordination among government departments, local bodies, and district administrations would be essential for achieving the objectives of the Yamuna Action Plan.
The state government expects the ongoing projects to significantly enhance wastewater treatment capacity and contribute to cleaner river systems in the coming years, with the December 2027 deadline serving as a key milestone in Haryana’s river rejuvenation efforts.
