Farmers’ leaders are expected to meet with Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann Today to demand the implementation of agriculture policy and to fulfill their other pending demands. The leaders were engaged in discussions with senior government officials yesterday regarding their key demands. Hundreds of farmers, under the banners of the Bhartiya Kisan Union (Ugrahan) and the Punjab Khet Mazdoor Union (PKMU), are protesting against the government’s failure to fulfill their demands. They are demanding the implementation of agriculture policy, enhanced efforts to address the drug crisis in the state, the allocation of land to landless laborers and farmers, environmental conservation, and the promotion of chemical-free farming practices. The protestors are currently holding a dharna at the Sector 34 Carnival Ground in Chandigarh.
Taking note the farmers’ protest, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Wednesday made the statement in Punjab Vidhan Sabha that unlike the Union government which introduces its policies without applying mind and consulting the people, the state government makes policies in consultation with people. He said that the agriculture policy is being drafted after due consultation with all the stakeholders whereas the industrial policy has been successfully implemented after due consultations with the industrialists. Bhagwant Singh Mann said that the state government is mulling to constitute an Industrial Advisory Commission with a chairman of Cabinet rank by including major industrialists in it.
