Phagwara, April 21
A 55-year-old Deputy Superintendent of Police died on Tuesday after an accidental discharge from his service revolver at the Police Quarters in Phagwara, officials said. DSP Yogesh Kumar Sharma was cleaning his weapon at his official residence near GN College along the Phagwara bypass Gaunspur service road when the firearm accidentally went off, leaving him critically injured. He was immediately taken to the Civil Hospital in Phagwara, where doctors declared him brought dead.
According to police, Sharma had earlier served in the Anti-Narcotics Task Force and was recently transferred to Chandigarh. Phagwara Superintendent of Police Madhvi Sharma said the bullet struck the officer in the chest. The incident has raised concerns about firearm safety protocols for personnel during handling and maintenance. Further details are awaited.
