New Delhi, June 17
The Supreme Court on Wednesday delivered a strong warning against cyber fraud, describing cyber criminals as “parasites” who prey on innocent people and saying they should face strict action.
The remarks came during a hearing on Wednesday when a man accused in multiple cybercrime cases sought to have several First Information Reports (FIRs) registered against him in different states combined into a single case.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice N Kotiswar Singh rejected the plea, stressing the widespread impact of cybercrime across the country. “You people are parasites. You take money from innocent investors and dupe them,” the Chief Justice said during the hearing. “For cyber criminals, we have to be very harsh.”
The court noted that victims of online fraud are often spread across different regions, making cybercrime a nationwide concern rather than a localised offence.
The Chief Justice observed that fraudsters frequently target people in one state before moving on to victims in another, affecting citizens across the country.
Emphasising the need to protect the public, the bench said it was in society’s interest that those involved in cyber fraud remain behind bars.
The Supreme Court declined to consolidate the FIRs but said the petitioner was free to approach the relevant high courts for appropriate relief.
