New Delhi, June 10
The Union Cabinet on Wednesday passed resolution congratulating Prime Minister Narendra Modi after he became India’s longest continuously serving democratically elected Prime Minister. Cabinet ministers also gave Modi a standing ovation, marking the milestone during a meeting of the government’s top decision-making body.
Modi surpassed the record previously held by India’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, becoming the longest-serving elected leader to hold the office without interruption.
The Prime Minister first assumed office on 26 May 2014 after leading the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to a decisive election victory. He secured a second consecutive mandate in 2019 and returned for a third term in June 2024. The Cabinet resolution recognised Modi’s political journey and the continuity of his leadership over more than a decade in office.
The milestone has drawn congratulations from political leaders in India and abroad, with supporters describing it as a reflection of sustained public confidence in his leadership.
