Ludhiana, June 25
Punjab BJP president Nitin Nabin on Monday called on party workers to intensify efforts to establish a “double-engine” government in the state, saying the BJP is preparing to contest all 117 seats in the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. Addressing a meeting of party office-bearers, current and former MPs, MLAs and district presidents in Ludhiana on Monday, Nabin urged workers to emulate the dedication of BJP cadres in West Bengal, whom he credited with strengthening the party and driving political change in the state.
Drawing comparisons between Punjab and West Bengal, he said issues such as law and order, gangsterism, drug abuse and the migration of young people had become matters of growing concern. He claimed that while West Bengal had struggled with a “government-plus-goonda culture”, Punjab was witnessing the rise of a “government-plus-corporate culture”, alleging that people were often forced to pay money to get legitimate work completed.
Nabin said the BJP should challenge what he described as a corrupt nexus through sustained public outreach and political activism. He argued that Punjab’s political and industrial revival would be difficult without a BJP-led “double-engine” government, a term commonly used by the party to describe governments aligned with the Centre.
The BJP leader stressed that strengthening the party organisation was a collective responsibility and not limited to senior office-bearers. He said the party needed deeper engagement at the grassroots level and should continue raising issues affecting both urban and rural communities.Highlighting the role of local workers, Nabin said the BJP’s strength rested with booth-level leaders and volunteers, urging senior leaders to maintain close coordination with them ahead of future elections. He also called for a statewide campaign against drug abuse, describing the issue as a major challenge facing Punjab.
The remarks came a day after Nabin launched a sharp attack on the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), describing its government as a “curse” for Punjab and urging voters to remove it from power in the 2027 election. He also asked party workers to take the achievements of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government to every household, saying the BJP alone could put Punjab back on a path of development.
Nabin began his three-day visit to Punjab on 20 June, travelling to Amritsar, Jalandhar and Ludhiana. On the final day of the tour, he also met Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria at Halwara airport.
