Kolkata, May 8
Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Kolkata on Friday ahead of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s legislature party meeting and the swearing-in ceremony of the party’s first government in West Bengal.Shah was received at the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport by senior BJP leaders, including Suvendu Adhikari, before heading to a hotel in New Town.
Later in the day, Shah is expected to attend the BJP legislature party meeting at the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre, where the party’s legislative leader will be chosen. On Saturday, he will join Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP president Nitin Nabin and chief ministers from NDA-ruled states at the swearing-in ceremony to be held at the Brigade Parade Ground. The BJP secured a landmark victory in the recently concluded assembly elections, ending the 15-year rule of the Trinamool Congress and delivering a major political setback to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Governor RN Ravi dissolved the state assembly on Thursday, clearing the way for the formation of the new government.
