Chandigarh, November 21
Punjab’s Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister Dr. Baljit Kaur intervened swiftly to prevent a child marriage in Rupnagar. Acting on a complaint from Childline, the minister directed officials to investigate and halt the marriage of a 17-year-old boy from Aaspur Kotla village, which violated the Child Marriage Prohibition Act.
The District Child Protection Unit (DCPU), in coordination with the Child Marriage Prohibition Officer, halted the wedding preparations by engaging with local panchayat members, the families involved, and the venue owner. Both families assured authorities the boy and girl would resume their education.
Dr. Kaur reaffirmed the Punjab government’s commitment to child welfare and urged citizens to report any child marriage cases.
