Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday concluded a three-day visit to Seychelles, marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries with a series of agreements aimed at strengthening cooperation in security, trade, technology and sustainable development.
During the visit, Modi held wide-ranging talks with Seychelles President Patrick Herminie, with both leaders reaffirming their commitment to a safe, secure and prosperous Indian Ocean region.
The two countries announced 19 outcomes spanning defence, maritime security, digital payments, space cooperation, healthcare, agriculture and education, reflecting an expanding partnership between India and the island nation.
As the Guest of Honour at Seychelles’ 50th National Day celebrations, Modi became the first Indian Prime Minister to attend the country’s Independence Day events. The celebrations also featured participation by Indian military contingents, underlining the long-standing defence relationship between the two nations.
Before leaving Seychelles, Modi said the visit had produced “substantive outcomes” that would further strengthen the longstanding friendship between the two countries.
“The past 50 years of India-Seychelles ties have been marked by deep trust and shared progress. The next fifty years will be defined by innovation, sustainability and shared prosperity,” he wrote on social media.
He also said it was an honour to join Seychelles in celebrating 50 years of Independence, describing the occasion as a significant milestone in the relationship between the two countries. The Ministry of External Affairs described the visit as an important step in deepening bilateral ties and advancing a shared vision for the Indian Ocean.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the visit reinforced both countries commitment to expanding cooperation across a range of sectors.
During his stay, Modi also addressed Seychelles’ National Assembly, where he called for global efforts to tackle climate change based on fairness, shared responsibility and equity, while highlighting the challenges faced by developing and island nations.
In recognition of his contribution to environmental sustainability and support for developing countries, President Herminie conferred Seychelles’ highest civilian honour, the Guardian of the Blue Horizon, on the Indian Prime Minister.
Modi was seen off at the airport by Seychelles Vice-President Sebastien Pillay and members of the Indian diaspora, bringing to a close a visit that both countries described as a milestone in their five-decade partnership.
