Ludhiana, June 27
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Saturday launched the “Soorma” campaign, a new phase of the state’s anti-drug drive aimed at empowering people who have recovered from addiction to help others rebuild their lives. At  a ceremony, the government honoured individuals who have remained drug-free for more than two years with specially designed “Soorma” rings and T-shirts. Mann said these recovered individuals would now serve as “Ambassadors of Hope”, encouraging others struggling with addiction to seek treatment while also being offered employment opportunities by the state government.
Addressing the gathering, Mann acknowledged the social stigma often faced by people recovering from drug addiction. He said those being honoured had shown courage by overcoming addiction and could now use their personal experiences to inspire others.
“Their journey proves that recovery is possible,” he said, adding that the government would continue strengthening rehabilitation services and expanding modern de-addiction centres across Punjab.
As part of the initiative, the chief minister announced that around 3,100 village sports grounds and 3,000 gyms would become operational by 15 July. He described sports as one of the most effective ways to steer young people away from drugs by providing healthy alternatives and constructive opportunities.
Mann said the state’s wider strategy against drug abuse also includes improving education, expanding healthcare services and strengthening rehabilitation programmes. He highlighted the government’s health insurance scheme, education reforms and road safety initiatives as part of broader efforts to improve public welfare.
The chief minister said recovered individuals enrolled under the Soorma programme would work alongside the government to build peer support networks in villages and towns across Punjab. He also launched an anthem dedicated to people recovering from addiction.
People who have completed de-addiction treatment and remained drug-free for at least two years can register for the programme by sending the word “Soorma” on WhatsApp to a dedicated government number.
The campaign forms the second phase of the Punjab government’s “Yudh Nashean Virudh” (War Against Drugs) initiative, which Mann said has been underway for more than a year. He reiterated that while authorities would continue taking strict action against drug traffickers, the government would also focus on rehabilitation, employment and reducing the stigma faced by people recovering from addiction.
Health Minister Dr Balbir Singh and other senior officials attended the launch event.
