New Delhi, June 24
India and the United States have concluded two days of ministerial-level talks aimed at advancing the first phase of a proposed bilateral trade agreement, as both countries work towards strengthening economic ties and resolving trade issues. The discussions took place in Washington between India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. The talks focused on reviewing progress and identifying ways to deepen trade and investment cooperation between the world’s largest and fifth-largest economies.
The negotiations come as both sides seek to reach an agreement before temporary US tariffs imposed on trading partners are due to expire on 24 July. The 10% tariffs were introduced by Washington earlier this year as part of a broader trade policy review.
In a post on social media, Goyal said he had concluded a series of meetings with Ambassador Greer and his delegation, adding that the two sides had reviewed the progress of ongoing trade discussions. He praised the efforts of both negotiating teams, describing the talks as “constructive” and “forward-looking”.
The framework for the proposed Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) was announced in February, raising hopes among businesses in both countries for easier market access and stronger commercial partnerships.
Officials have not disclosed details of the issues discussed, but both governments are aiming to finalise the first phase of the agreement in the coming weeks.
