Bratislava,June 15
India and Slovakia have upgraded their relationship to a Comprehensive Partnership following talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico in Bratislava.
The two leaders agreed to strengthen cooperation in trade, defence and investment, while also backing the early implementation of the proposed India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
Speaking after the meeting, Modi said the new partnership reflected the two countries’ shared priorities and future ambitions. He also thanked Slovakia for its support in advancing the India-EU trade deal which is expected to boost economic ties and create new opportunities for businesses and startups.
The leaders also discussed defence cooperation, with both sides finalising a Letter of Intent aimed at expanding collaboration between their defence industries. Modi described defence ties as a reflection of the growing strategic trust between the two countries.
Fico welcomed the India-EU FTA, calling it one of the most ambitious trade agreements under discussion. He said Slovakia would take practical steps to support its implementation.
Modi’s visit to Slovakia is the first by an Indian prime minister and forms part of his week-long tour of Europe.
