Panchkula, April 25
Former Panchkula Mayor Upinder Kaur Ahluwalia on Saturday joined BJP in the presence of the Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini at her residence. Ahluwalia formally quit the Indian National Congress on Friday, expressing dissatisfaction with recent developments in the party. In her resignation letter, she said she was unhappy with what she described as a shift away from the party’s core values and raised concerns over leadership direction and lack of clarity on development priorities for Panchkula.
She said these issues had made it difficult for her to continue in the party while serving the public, prompting her decision to step down from both primary membership and her Pradesh Congress Committee post.
The event was attended by BJP state president Mohan Lal Badoli, Rajya Sabha MP Rekha Sharma, Kalka MLA Shakti Rani Sharma and mayoral candidate Shyamlal Bansal. The BJP described the inductions as a sign of growing public support in the region, while the Congress has yet to formally respond.
The development adds to a series of political shifts in Haryana, where local leaders have increasingly changed parties ahead of future electoral contests.
