Panchkula, June 23
The Panchkula Police have solved a high-value jewelry theft case involving a 91-year-old woman and arrested a domestic worker accused of stealing gold and diamond ornaments worth approximately ₹40 lakh from the elderly resident’s home on Tuesday. According to ACP(Crime) Arvind Kamboj, the complaint was lodged on June 13 by a Chandigarh resident, whose 91-year-old mother-in-law lives in the Mansa Devi area of Panchkula. The complainant alleged that a woman employed as a cook at the residence had stolen valuable gold and diamond jewelry kept inside the house.
Following the complaint, a case was registered at Mansa Devi Police Station under relevant sections of the law, and an investigation was launched.
The probe was conducted by a team led by Detective Staff In-Charge Tajinder Pal Singh, who examined the facts, circumstances, and potential suspects in the case. During the investigation, suspicion fell on the woman employed as a cook, prompting police to question her.
Acting on the evidence gathered, police arrested the accused, identified as 33-year-old Heena, a resident of Manimajra in Chandigarh, on 20 June. The arrest was carried out in the presence of a woman police officer. Further investigation was conducted by ASI Gurmej Singh.
During interrogation, the accused allegedly provided key information that led investigators to the stolen jewelry. Based on these disclosures, police carried out recovery proceedings and seized the stolen valuables.
DCP Crime and Traffic Amarinder Singh said the accused was produced before a court on 21 June, following which police obtained a two-day remand for further questioning.
“During the remand period, police recovered gold and diamond jewelry worth approximately ₹40 lakh from the possession of the accused woman,” Singh said.
Upon completion of the remand period, the accused was produced before the court and subsequently remanded to judicial custody.
Panchkula Police have also appealed to residents to ensure proper verification of domestic employees before hiring them, stressing that such precautions can help prevent similar incidents in the future.
