Women’s Reservation Law Amendment Should Not Be Politicised, Says Tharoor

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor warned that the upcoming women’s reservation law amendments should not be used for political gain. He said the changes should focus on promoting gender equality instead of serving party interests. Tharoor made these comments ahead of a special three-day Parliament session where related bills are expected to be introduced.

Tharoor reaffirmed the Congress party’s support for one-third reservation for women, stressing the need for a fair and inclusive process. He expressed concern that the special session may be intended for political advantage ahead of state elections and cautioned that rushed delimitation could undermine democracy.

“The Congress is committed to ensuring that women’s reservation is implemented in a manner that is both inclusive and just. The amendment must not be used as a tool for political advantage that diminishes the role of Parliament as a space for genuine deliberation,” Tharoor said, echoing views from the recent Congress Working Committee meeting.

Party leaders have also criticized the government’s approach, saying there has not been enough consultation with opposition parties. They worry this could upset the balance between states, especially in the south and northeast. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge is expected to call a meeting of opposition leaders to plan a joint response before the special session starts.

As Parliament prepares to discuss changes to the women’s reservation law, opposition parties are urging careful debate to ensure the amendments are fair and protect democratic values.
