US President Donald Trump has escalated his trade offensive against Beijing, raising tariffs on Chinese imports to 125% while pausing similar duties on over 75 other countries for 90 days.
The US president made the announcement in a statement posted to his Truth Social account, citing what he described as China’s “lack of respect” for global markets.
“Based on the lack of respect that China has shown to the World’s Markets, I am hereby raising the Tariff charged to China by the United States of America to 125%, effective immediately,” Trump wrote. “At some point, hopefully in the near future, China will realize that the days of ripping off the U.S.A., and other Countries, is no longer sustainable or acceptable.”
In contrast, Trump said he had authorised a temporary reduction in reciprocal tariffs to 10% and a 90-day suspension on penalties for other countries, pointing to the willingness of more than 75 nations to engage in trade negotiations with the US.
“These Countries have not, at my strong suggestion, retaliated in any way, shape, or form against the United States,” he added, referencing talks with the Departments of Commerce, Treasury, and the United States Trade Representative (USTR).
