Chandigarh, January 7
At least 95 people were killed and many injured after a powerful earthquake struck near Shigatse, one of Tibet’s holiest cities, on Tuesday. The quake hit at 9:05 a.m., with the China Earthquake Networks Centre measuring it at magnitude 6.8 while the US Geological Survey recorded the tremor at magnitude 7.1 and a depth of 10 km (6 miles), according to media reports. The quake caused significant damage to buildings in the region, according to local reports. Rescue efforts are underway as authorities assess the extent of the destruction in the affected areas.
