Sanitation workers’ indefinite strike continues in Shimla, Mayor appeals employees to resume duty

Sanitation services in Shimla continued to remain affected on the second day of the indefinite strike by sanitation workers employed under the SEHB Society, leading to growing concerns over waste management across the city.

With household garbage remaining uncollected in several areas, the Municipal Corporation Shimla has introduced alternative arrangements by creating focal collection points in all wards and deploying vehicles to collect waste.

Mayor Surender Chauhan appealed to sanitation workers to return to work and assured them that their demand for a 10 per cent salary hike would be considered in the AGM after the model code of conduct ends.

He said the Municipal Corporation had introduced several welfare measures for sanitation workers, including insurance coverage of up to Rs 30 lakh, an increase in Diwali bonus to Rs 2,000, and additional leave benefits. The mayor also thanked residents for cooperating with the temporary waste collection arrangements and said the civic body was making efforts to maintain cleanliness in the city during the strike.
