A retired Inspector General (IG) of the Punjab Police, Amar Singh Chahal, is in a critical condition after allegedly shooting himself at his home in Patiala, police said on Monday. Chahal, who had been living in Patiala since retiring from service, sustained a gunshot wound and was rushed to a private hospital, where he remains under treatment.
Sources said a suicide note have been found at the scene. The exact circumstances leading to the incident are under investigation. Chahal was among the accused in the 2015 Faridkot firing case. In February 2023, a Punjab Police Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by LK Yadav filed a chargesheet in a Faridkot court in connection with the case.
Patiala Senior Superintendent of Police Varun Sharma said police teams reached Chahal’s residence immediately after receiving information about the gunshot. “He was in a very serious condition and was shifted without delay to a private hospital,” the SSP said.
