Kochi, March 11
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said the Centre’s decision to change the name of Kerala to “Keralam” was a moment of joy for Malayalis. Speaking at the golden jubilee celebrations of the Akhila Kerala Dheevara Sabha in Kochi, Modi praised the role of the state’s fishing community, particularly their efforts during the devastating 2018 Kerala floods. He said fishermen had shown exceptional courage and dedication during the disaster and noted that the Dheevara Sabha had spent the past 50 years advocating for the rights and welfare of fishermen.
The Prime Minister said the Centre government had also launched several initiatives to support the fishing community. These include the installation of more than 4,500 satellite-based transponders in fishing boats to improve safety at sea.
Modi arrived at Cochin International Airport in the morning before travelling by helicopter to a naval base and then by road to Marine Drive Kochi for the event.
The visit comes as Modi attends a series of programmes in the poll-bound state, including the inauguration of an election convention organised by the National Democratic Alliance.
