The Punjab Police’s Student Police Cadet programme is gaining strong participation from schools across the state as authorities continue efforts to promote leadership, discipline and social responsibility among young students.

Officials said the initiative, launched in August 2023 under the Punjab Police Youth Connectivity programme, has so far benefited nearly 11,200 students from 280 selected schools across Punjab.

According to officials, a total of 1,965 indoor classes and 698 outdoor sessions have been organised under the programme to help students become responsible citizens and encourage greater social awareness.

Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said the programme is designed for students of Classes 8 and 9, with regular indoor and outdoor activities conducted every month.

“Under this programme, one indoor and two outdoor classes are conducted for the students of Classes 8 and 9 each month to build responsible citizens,” Yadav said.

He added that students are also being given opportunities to visit government and police institutions including deputy commissioners’ offices, police stations, Saanjh Kendras and the Punjab Police Academy.

Officials said around 450 cadets recently visited the Punjab Police Academy in Phillaur, where they attended sessions on cyber safety and the Student Police Cadet framework. The students also toured facilities including the museum, library, and Phillaur Fort.

Special DGP Gurpreet Kaur Deo said such visits help students better understand the functioning of government institutions and policing systems.

“Such events help young minds grow intellectually and make them aware of how the government and police function. It removes the fear of police and develops the confidence to reach out to government institutions in case of need,” Deo said.

She said the programme also encourages youngsters to stay away from undesirable activities and motivates them towards social responsibility through positive engagement and mentorship.

Officials further said the initiative has enabled students to participate in public events, including the Republic Day Parade. A total of 440 cadets from 11 districts took part in the parade after the department provided them with uniforms.

Punjab Police said the programme is being implemented in coordination with the education department through regular orientation sessions involving school principals, teachers, district education officers and police officials associated with Saanjh Kendras.

The initiative aims to strengthen trust between young people and the police while helping students build confidence, leadership skills, and civic awareness from an early age.
