Chandigarh, March 3
The Punjab Cyber Crime Division has arrested Gaurav Kumar, the main accused behind a fake website scam that impersonated the state’s Mining Department, leading to losses of ₹40-50 lakh. Gaurav Kumar, in collusion with a mining businessman, cloned the Punjab government’s mining portal and generated over 2,000 fake permits using forged QR and barcodes. These permits facilitated illegal mining operations by allowing vehicles to bypass security checks.
The police have recovered website backups, fake receipts, vehicle images, and other incriminating data. An FIR has been registered, and investigations are ongoing to uncover the full extent of the network involved. The Punjab Police reiterated their commitment to digital security, with the cybercrime team working around the clock to combat online scams and financial crimes.
