Four Punjabi youths who had been stranded in Iraq for nearly six months have returned to India, following intervention by Punjab Cabinet Minister Sanjeev Arora. The minister said he was alerted to the situation via WhatsApp by the youths, all from Hoshiarpur district. They had reportedly faced mistreatment and feared for their safety, prompting them to seek urgent assistance.
Responding to their appeal, Arora contacted India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and the Indian Embassy in Iraq to ensure the youths’ safe return. The individuals — Gurpreet Singh, Avtar Singh, Surjeet Singh, and Amarjit Singh — landed in India on Wednesday. Arora said the state government remains committed to safeguarding the welfare of Punjabis abroad and will continue to work with the Union Government in such matters.
