Chandigarh, December 14
The Punjab State Women Commission (PSWC) has issued a notice to Harjinder Singh Dhami, President of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), for derogatory remarks against women, following a telephonic conversation in which he allegedly made offensive comments about former SGPC president Bibi Jagir Kaur.
The notice, issued under Section 12 of the Punjab State Women Commission Act, 2001, comes after an audio recording of Dhami’s remarks circulated on social media. The PSWC has condemned the use of demeaning language and emphasized that such behavior is unbecoming of Dhami’s role as head of the SGPC, an institution that should uphold the dignity and respect of all individuals.
PSWC Chairperson Raj Lali Gill called upon the SGPC to take immediate action, referencing Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s teachings on the respect and honor of women. The Commission has directed Dhami to appear in person at its office in Mohali and submit a written explanation by December 17, 2024. Failure to comply will prompt legal action.
