Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former Bangladesh prime minister and Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, who passed away in Dhaka. In a message posted on X today, Modi offered condolences to Ms Zia’s family and to the people of Bangladesh, describing her death as a significant loss. He said her contributions to Bangladesh’s development and to India–Bangladesh relations would be remembered.
“As the first woman prime minister of Bangladesh, her important contributions towards the development of Bangladesh, as well as India-Bangladesh relations, will always be remembered,” he said. Modi also recalled meeting Ms Zia in Dhaka in 2015, saying he hoped her vision and legacy would continue to guide bilateral ties. He added that he prayed for strength for her family and that her soul may rest in peace.
