Lok Sabha on Tuesday admitted the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024, commonly known as the “One Nation, One Election” Bill, with 269 Members of Parliament (MPs) voting in favor and 198 MPs opposing the proposal. The Bill was introduced by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, who subsequently requested Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to refer the Bill to a Joint Parliamentary Committee for further deliberations. The amendment aims to streamline election processes across the country. Additionally, Meghwal announced plans to introduce the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024, which seeks to synchronize elections in the Union territories of Jammu and Kashmir, Puducherry, and the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi.
