Dharamshala, June 11
The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) has launched a protest against the Central Government, the National Testing Agency (NTA) and the Union Education Ministry, demanding the resignation of the NTA Chairman and the Union Education Minister over alleged irregularities in national-level examinations.
Addressing a press conference in Dharamshala, NSUI office-bearers alleged that the country’s education system was steadily deteriorating and that serious flaws had emerged in the conduct of competitive examinations, putting the future of millions of students at risk.
The organisation stated that controversies surrounding examinations such as NEET, JEE and NET had repeatedly surfaced, weakening candidates’ trust in the examination system. According to NSUI leaders, nearly 18 crore candidates appeared in various NTA-conducted examinations between 2018 and 2026, yet the agency’s functioning has remained under constant scrutiny.
The student organisation also questioned the appointment of NTA Chairman Professor Pradeep Kumar Joshi, alleging that adequate scrutiny was not conducted regarding his previous tenure and controversies linked to him before his appointment. NSUI leaders clarified that they had no objection to any individual’s ideology, but stressed that accountability and transparency must be ensured in a sector as crucial as education.
The organisation demanded that both the Union Education Minister and the NTA Chairman take moral responsibility and resign from their posts. It further called for the dissolution of the NTA governing body and the appointment of qualified, impartial individuals to oversee the agency, so that injustice against students could be prevented and the examination system reformed.
NSUI office-bearer Amar Kumar said student organisations across the country were staging protests over these demands and warned that the agitation would continue until the Union Education Minister and the NTA Chairman were removed from their positions.
During the press conference, the organisation also expressed concern over recent issues linked to the Central University of Himachal Pradesh. NSUI alleged that a National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) textbook had incorrectly depicted the national flag and demanded action.
Additionally, the organisation sought an impartial investigation into alleged paper leak incidents and examination-related irregularities at the Central University.
“An institution as prestigious as the National Testing Agency is responsible for conducting the country’s largest examinations in a transparent and fair manner. If such an institution continues to remain embroiled in controversies, it is natural for students to lose faith in the entire education system,” Amar Kumar said.
The organisation urged the Central Government to take immediate and effective steps to reform the education system and safeguard students’ interests.
