Shimla, June 23
Himachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister and Transport Minister Mukesh Agnihotri has adopted a strict stance over the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) employees’ announcement of a statewide bus shutdown from 24 June. He said the government would not allow public transport services to be disrupted and could recruit new drivers and conductors if required.
Agnihotri said the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) is currently in force in the state, and no one would be permitted to take the law into their own hands by going on strike or stopping bus operations.
“The government will not allow HRTC services to be affected under any circumstances. If employees go on strike and buses stop operating, new drivers and conductors will be recruited if required. The public will not be allowed to suffer,” he said.
The Deputy CM said a chakka jam was not a solution to resolve employees’ demands. He added that the government was always ready for discussions with workers but would not tolerate pressure tactics.
Agnihotri alleged that some employee leaders had crossed the line in their statements, and their approach had forced the government to consider strict action.
“HRTC is the lifeline of the state. The government will protect the interests of employees, but the general public cannot be put into difficulty,” Agnihotri said.
The statement comes after HRTC employees announced a strike from 24 June over their pending demands and concerns. The government has maintained that essential transport services will continue without interruption.
