Kullu, April 18
A landslide near Ghatigarh on the Manikaran–Barshaini road in Himachal Pradesh’s Kullu district damaged a vehicle and disrupted traffic on Saturday, though no casualties were reported.
According to officials, an Alto car was hit by falling debris and rocks after a sudden landslide occurred in the morning hours. The vehicle’s occupants managed to exit in time after sensing danger, narrowly escaping injury. The car, however, was badly damaged in the incident.
The landslide led to the closure of the road, with large amounts of debris blocking vehicular movement. Authorities said efforts would be required to clear the route and restore traffic.
Local residents have expressed concern over repeated landslides in the Ghatigarh stretch, stating that the road has become increasingly unsafe. They have urged the administration to provide an alternative route to ensure safer connectivity.
Kullu MLA Sunder Singh Thakur said he had visited the site along with officials a day earlier and was informed that a valley bridge is planned over the Parvati River to address the issue. He said directions have been issued to the concerned departments and the local panchayat to obtain necessary clearances under the Forest Rights Act so that the bridge can be installed at the earliest.
Authorities said steps are being taken to minimize inconvenience to commuters and prevent similar disruptions in the future.
