Kullu, June 11
Residents of nearly a dozen villages in Kullu district’s Khrahal Valley are grappling with an escalating drinking water crisis, as locals struggle to access water for household consumption and agricultural irrigation.
A delegation of villagers from the valley, led by District Council member Anil Rana of the Lara Kelo ward, visited the Jal Shakti Department office at Dhalpur and met the Executive Engineer to demand immediate restoration of the Talogi-based 16-tank drinking water scheme.
Speaking on the issue, Anil Rana said the water supply scheme had significantly resolved the region’s water problems when it was first launched. However, the project suffered severe damage during the 2025 natural disaster, resulting in renewed hardship for residents across the valley.
He stated that the matter had already been brought to the attention of administrative authorities on several occasions, but the condition of the Talogi 16-tank drinking water scheme had still not improved.
“Nearly a dozen villages in Khrahal Valley are bearing the consequences of the damaged scheme. The Jal Shakti Department should take immediate steps to restore the project so that people do not continue to suffer due to the shortage of drinking water,” Rana said.
Meanwhile, the Jal Shakti Department Executive Engineer, Amit Kumar, acknowledged that the scheme had been affected by the natural disaster. He said repairs were required to the electricity transformer serving the project, and that discussions had already been held with officials of the Electricity Board.
“The transformer will be installed soon so that residents do not face further difficulties in accessing drinking water,” Kumar said.
He added that, at present, drinking water was being supplied to rural areas every two days, and there was no severe drought-like situation in the region.
