Samana, May 29
In a landmark moment for transgender representation in Punjab politics, Komal Mahant has become the first transgender person to win a Municipal Council election in the state. Contesting on a Shiromani Akali Dal ticket, Mahant secured victory from Ward No. 18 in Samana town of Patiala district during the ongoing local body elections.
Komal Mahant’s strong social media presence also played an important role in her campaign. With nearly 63.8K followers on Instagram, she actively connected with people online, especially youth and local residents.
Political observers say her victory reflects changing social attitudes and growing acceptance of diverse voices in public leadership.
After her victory, Mahant thanked her supporters, party leadership, and God for the public support she received during the campaign.
She also credited Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal for encouraging her to contest the election with confidence.
Mahant’s victory is being seen as a significant step forward for transgender representation in Punjab politics.
