Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday said it is extending full legal and consular support to Nimisha Priya, a nurse from Kerala who faces the death penalty in Yemen. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed that the Centre government has provided legal assistance and appointed a lawyer to assist Priya’s family. “We have also arranged regular consular visits and have been in constant touch with both local authorities in Yemen and the family members to resolve the issue,” Deswal said. The case has drawn widespread attention in India, particularly in Kerala, after it was revealed that Priya was sentenced to death for allegedly murdering a Yemeni national. Her family claims she acted in self-defence after being subjected to months of harassment.
