External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar, will travel to China next week to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Foreign Ministers’ meeting — a significant visit marking the first by an Indian foreign minister to Beijing since the deadly Galwan Valley clash in 2020. The high-level gathering, to be hosted by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, is expected to draw senior diplomats from member countries including Pakistan, Iran, and Russia, sources familiar with the developments confirmed. Jaishankar’s visit comes shortly after recent trips by National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who travelled to China last month to attend separate SCO meetings.
While the SCO is a multilateral forum, Jaishankar is expected to hold bilateral meetings on the sidelines with key regional players, including the host nation China and Central Asian republics, as well as Russia.
