Shimla, April 18
The Himachal Pradesh Congress on Friday appointed 71 block presidents as part of its preparations for the coming panchayat and urban local body elections in the state. The appointments were approved by the state Congress chief, Vinay Kumar, and took effect immediately, according to an official statement.
The notification regarding the appointments was issued by the State Congress General Secretary Organization, Vinod Zinta. The move is seen as an organizational step to strengthen the party at the grassroots level ahead of the local body polls scheduled before May 31.
Earlier, on March 28, All India Congress Committee president Mallikarjun Kharge had approved the constitution of key party bodies in the state, including the Political Affairs Committee, Disciplinary Committee, state office bearers, and the Executive Committee. This came after a gap of nearly sixteen months.
Party sources indicated that the latest appointments were made to accommodate leaders from different sections, ensuring caste and regional representation within the organization.
The restructuring of the party unit follows the earlier dissolution of the Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee and its district and block units in November 2024. Vinay Kumar was later appointed as the state Congress chief in November 2025.
The appointments are expected to play a key role in mobilizing support for the Congress in the upcoming local elections, which are seen as a precursor to the state assembly polls scheduled for the end of 2027.
