Hamirpur, June 24
The Hamirpur district administration has intensified preventive measures in parts of the Nadaun revenue subdivision following a rabies-related death and concerns over the spread of the disease in the area, health officials said on Wednesday.
Chief Medical Officer Dr Ajay Atri said the Health Department immediately initiated precautionary action after receiving information about the death of a Jammu resident who had been living in Bhalun village of Nadaun subdivision. The patient succumbed to rabies at Dr Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College, Tanda.
Dr Atri said a team from the department visited the deceased’s family, gathered detailed information regarding the case and provided medical counselling. Family members were informed about rabies transmission, its symptoms, and the necessary preventive measures.
The Health Department has also launched awareness activities in the affected area. The Medical Officer in Charge of the Sera Primary Health Centre visited Bhalun village to assess the situation and interact with residents.
According to Dr Atri, all precautionary measures prescribed under public health protocols have been implemented in the village, and active surveillance has been initiated to monitor any suspected cases.
The department has directed ASHA workers and field staff to immediately report incidents involving dog or animal bites and ensure that victims are referred promptly for anti-rabies vaccination.
Health officials have also ensured adequate availability of anti-rabies vaccines at health centres across the district. The Animal Husbandry Department has been requested to examine animals suspected of carrying the infection.
The Chief Medical Officer appealed to residents to seek immediate medical attention and undergo anti-rabies vaccination if bitten by a dog or any other animal. Authorities said awareness and surveillance efforts will continue to prevent the spread of the disease and safeguard public health.
