Teachers in government schools across Himachal Pradesh where student pass rates have fallen between 0 and 25% are facing disciplinary action, the state’s Education Minister Rohit Thakur said on Wednesday. In a move aimed at enforcing accountability, the Education Department has issued notices to staff in these underperforming schools and ordered a freeze on their salary increments. Thakur said the step is part of a broader plan to raise education standards.
“We are holding teachers accountable where performance is unacceptably low. Measures are being taken to ensure better outcomes going forward,” the minister said, adding that the government is introducing targeted support to help schools improve in the coming months.
Thakur also addressed criticism from Leader of the Opposition Jairam Thakur over Nursery Teacher Training (NTT) recruitments. He dismissed the allegations, stating: “It’s unrealistic to expect appreciation from the opposition — their job is to question the government.”
He further alleged that the previous BJP-led administration failed to make any NTT appointments during its five-year term. “This government has started the recruitment process, which is being conducted independently by HPSEDC, not directly by the government,” he clarified.
