Manali/Dharamshala, May 19
Petrol and diesel prices increased once again across India on Tuesday, marking the second hike within a week and the second increase in just five days. After a Rs 3 rise on May 15, fuel rates were revised again, with prices increasing by 85 paise on petrol and 88 paise on diesel. In Manali, petrol prices reached Rs 99.25 per litre, while diesel climbed to Rs 91.23 per litre.
The earlier hike last Friday had raised premium petrol prices by Rs 2.95, normal petrol by Rs 2.90, and diesel by Rs 2.73 per litre. Locals and vehicle owners expressed concern over the repeated increases, saying they would directly impact tourism, transportation costs, and household expenses in Manali. Some petrol pumps in the region also reported temporary fuel shortages.
People said the impact of the Middle East crisis was now becoming visible and warned that further hikes could increase inflation in the coming days. Opinions among citizens remained divided, with some criticising the Centre for failing to control fuel prices, while others argued that India was handling the situation better compared to many countries.
Taxi driver Amandeep, who arrived from Punjab, said repeated fuel hikes within a single week would affect everyone, especially transport operators. Niharanjan, a visitor from Bathinda, said the Centre was managing prices effectively despite the global crisis and noted that fuel prices in India had risen more gradually than elsewhere.
Meanwhile, Bajr Singh from Sudhed said rising fuel prices would directly increase inflation and affect common people. Kishan Kumar from Delhi criticised the government, alleging that fuel prices were rising despite lower crude oil rates and accusing the Centre of failing to work in public interest.
Petrol pump owner Amit Behal from Patlikuhal confirmed the latest price increase but said there was no fuel shortage at his station.
