Dharamshala, May 28
The first three-day Tibet Cultural Festival commenced at the Police Ground in Dharamshala on Thursday, with Tibetan President Penpa Tsering inaugurating the event. Addressing the gathering, Tsering said the festival aims to raise awareness among Indians and younger generations about Tibetan culture, history, and traditions.
He said Tibetans have been living in exile for the past 65 years, but many people still lack basic information about Tibet and its cultural roots. Tsering highlighted that the India-Tibet border stretches from Arunachal Pradesh to Jammu and Kashmir, underscoring the importance of understanding Tibet’s historical and cultural significance for Indians.
He also stated that the Tibetan language, script, and Buddhist traditions originated from India, including the Nalanda tradition introduced in Tibet during the eighth century. According to him, several Buddhist teachings were translated into Tibetan, helping preserve the ancient knowledge.
Tsering said efforts would be made to organize similar cultural festivals every year and expand them to other states depending on funding and support. He also thanked the Indian and Himachal Pradesh governments for providing support and facilities to the Tibetan community.
