Chandigarh, May 30
At least five migrant labourers were killed and 29 others injured, some critically, after a powerful blast ripped through a firecracker manufacturing unit in Punjab’s Muktsar district in the early hours of Friday. The explosion occurred around 1am in Singhewala village, reducing the building to rubble. Emergency crews rushed to the site, pulling survivors from the debris and transporting the injured to nearby hospitals.
The officials said that the workers were involved in the production and packaging of fireworks when the blast took place. Most of them were migrant labourers from other states. “The cause of the explosion is still under investigation,” a senior official said. However, the scale of damage suggests a significant quantity of explosive materials was present inside the building.
