Shimla, October 18
Shimla’s bustling markets saw heavy footfall on Friday as people turned out in large numbers to shop for jewellery and utensils on the occasion of Dhanteras. From early morning, crowds gathered at shops selling gold, silver, brass and other metal items, following the tradition of making auspicious purchases on this day. According to the Hindu calendar, Dhanteras is observed on the 13th day of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Kartik, marking the appearance of Lord Dhanvantari.
Traders said while inflation has impacted overall spending, relief from GST has helped ease prices. They also noted the growing influence of online shopping, which has slightly affected in-store sales. Despite this, the festive spirit remained strong as buyers queued up at jewellery and utensil shops across the city.
